Rt.Hon. David Cameron: Contribution by Hindu Community

In July 2009 Rt.Hon. David Cameron gave speech to Indian Community on The Hindu Contribution.

Today, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Hindu community and all it brings to this country. Everyone knows about your commitment to the public service, shown in the number of Hindus that work as doctors, pharmacist, and as civil servants, serving our society. And everyone knows about your kindness of spirit, Hindu temples up and down the country open their doors to people of all faiths and none.

But everyone knows the three facts I am about to tell you.

First, the Hindus are the most law – abiding people in Britain. You make up one percent of the population of England and Wales, but less than a third of one person of the prison population. Second, Hindus are the hardest working people in Britain. You thrive in business and have lowest level of unemployment of any visible minority group. And third, Hindus are most family oriental community in Britain. You are more likely to stay married, keep your families together and especially look after your elderly. We all want a country that has less crim, is hardest working, and values the institution of the family. So, you don’t just contribute to our society. You shine a light on how we must live.

Cohesive Society

There is just one other thing, I want to say today. One of the greatest challenges we face is as a country is to show how it is possible to build a strong, cohesive and united country with people of different faiths, colour and creeds. Britain Indians are thriving in recent years in sports, in culture and in politics.

Conclusion

In conclusion let me say this. This the kind of Britain I want to live in, and I know you do too.One where no one is held back, something to offer and live together as one. That’s a big ask – I know. But I wouldn’t be asking you if I didn’t believe we could do it. The Hindu community is a shining example of the can do, will – do attitude we need in this country. So together, let’s build a better future.
